The time with my NC parents here in Texas sped by way too fast. I wanted to try to squeeze in every possible thing that I'd want to do with them throughout the entire year, in to their brief visit. As it was, I felt lucky to have gotten to go shopping with my mom for my birthday gift (even though it's not for a couple of weeks yet), out to lunch with them at one of our favorite Fort Worth spots, go to church a couple of times, enjoy family game time a few evenings, and a few other little things here and there. If you've never had great distance between you and your family (and I'm not talking about when you went away to college) for a great length of time, then you might not understand the emotion of visits like this for me and my family. It's the emotional high upon their arrival, the "settling in" for the meat of their visit, and the emotional low leading up to and the day of their departure. It's goodness and sadness all wrapped in to one. And while I can wallow in the "depths" about how this distance affects us from different perspectives, I know that we can only live our lives and be happy with the blessing of our own perfectly unique little family.
We are beyond happy that my parents came to stay with us during Christmas though. For that we are immensely grateful, and we'll count their visit among our blessings.
