This past Monday was Alex's first day back from spring break. Alex was so not wanting to go back, but things quickly changed when he realized there was a school-wide celebration of Pi Day going on. Typically "celebrated" on 3/14, they had to delay it by a week since everyone was on spring break. I'm not sure why it was a school-wide celebration since the concept of pi is not something generally understood by the younger set, but anyhoo. By the time Alex got out of school when I asked him what pi was he could tell me that some of the digits were 3.1415. But more than that, he realized that, on this day anyway, it was also about pizza [pie] for lunch, a fun pi-related afternoon pep rally, and yummy pie for dessert at the end of the day. For a 1st grader that's not too bad!
For the pep rally Alex & his classmates & teacher dressed up as "pi"rates each with part of the pi number on their hook. Those kids looked so darned cute with their eye patches, bandanas, tattoos & hooks (oh, and the facial hair!). His class actually won the spirit stick (remember those at pep rallies?) for their inspired performance!
