Homegrown...

In early May during one of Alex's cub scout meetings, they planted seeds of various kinds (pumpkins, cucumbers and a mystery vegetable) in little pots.  It was a nice little project.  I figured that, as past experience has shown, we would have cute little seedlings that would shrivel up in to nothingness. Neither A.J. or I has a green thumb.  Last year, for example, we had two gorgeous heirloom tomato plants that grew like crazy but never produced one tomato.  So you can see our track record is not very good.

But Alex's seedlings kept growing so we decided to plop them in the ground and see what happened.  Alongside his mini garden we planted three heirloom tomato plants to see if maybe this time we could get some lovely tomatoes.  Well, Alex has proven that he can successfully grow things.  We're going to have pumpkins galore, and we've just harvested his first cucumber.  The mystery vegetable continues to grow as well.  And our tomato plants appear (knock on wood) to be thriving.  We're already strategizing what we might be able to successfully grow next year.  Do we dare to dream?! I'm glad to see at least someone in this family has a green thumb - we may have to hire him full time next summer!
Alex had the honor of picking the first cucumber from his garden! It was deee-licious!
