This evening we took Alex to his new schools "Meet the Teacher." His new teacher is Mrs. Easter, and seems to be a lovely lady with some good experience under her belt. As A.J. mentioned, it appears as though she may run a tight ship which will definitely be to Alex's benefit. I was quite proud of him, watching as Mrs. Easter and he met and introduced themselves. He was direct, looked her in the eye and shook her hand. That's my boy! :)
I predict that he will have a fairly smooth transition socially. He knows (or in some cases is at least acquainted with) a couple of the kids in his new class as well as in a few of the other second grade classes. That is a good thing. I've tried to gently coach him over the past four or so months on choosing friends wisely - I know that may sound ridiculous for a second grader, but if nothing else, I'm "planting a few seeds."
Educationally, I think that he will do very well in reading, creative writing, science and social studies. I think we will have to work hard on our math facts. His previous school did a decent job teaching math, but the difference between the two is, I think, a bit noticeable. But he and I are working on really getting his math facts down good and I think he will be able to be on par with his peers fairly soon.
Overall, I expect Alex to flourish at his new school. While every now and then there may arise a challenge or two, I think we are at a place that is well-equipped to partner with A.J. and me to give Alex the best, most positive learning experience!
As for Ayson, he has his "Meet the Teacher" tomorrow evening. I have absolutely no idea what to expect from his upcoming first year of pre-school. I'll be curious to see if his teachers (Lord, bless them) have any luck reigning him in at all (especially after this week where he was put in a time out in the dairy dept. of HEB, and in the shoe dept. of a department store, and spent the majority of our shopping time in both stores making toot noises by blowing in to his hand). I'm just praying I don't get any phone calls from his teachers!! Actually, I think the structure will do him good as well as discipline from an authority figure other than A.J. or me, and I think it'll do him a world of good getting to be around kids his own age! I'm excited for him too! Update on his evening will be coming up!
