We are officially in to our first week of school as of this past Monday. It is good to finally be rolling along on this new adventure for us, and has put to rest a lot of my anxiety about my new role. So how's it going, you ask? It's actually, in my whopping three days of experience, going really well. Organizationally, I feel well-prepared with both boys. And I've found it's much easier teaching two kids in separate grades than I was anticipating.
Surprises thus far? Alex is really enjoying his math. He seems to really like the video format of the teaching, and being able to key in his homework assignments online. Ayson has actually been receptive to school. He was a big unknown for me, but I have been pleasantly surprised. Of course the first day he attempted to inform me he wouldn't be going to school. I told him that was fine but he would have to sit in his room until he got his classes done for the day, and that I didn't mind waiting. He promptly joined me in the playroom! :) Today I had my first experience of Ayson overhearing my working with Alex on his grammar. Ace was sitting at the table playing with Playdoh while Alex was doing some oral exercises for his grammar class. I had been reading aloud sentences and Alex would tell me what part of the sentence was the subject, and what part was the predicate. After a number of sentences, Ayson piped up and actually answered one of the questions, then he went back to playing again and had no interest in doing any more problems with us. I don't know if it was an isolated incident, but it did show me that he is picking up things that are going on around him even when he seems to be deep in the middle of play.
So it's a good week so far. I am seeing this as something, even through the challenges, that I will really enjoy doing with my boys. Here's to a wonderful school year at our little house of learning! :)
