A.J.'s sister and her husband own several bloodhounds. G.L. has two of the dogs trained as search and rescue working dogs. He likes to take the dogs out frequently to get his them as much practice as possible finding people. So he usually gets someone he knows to hide out somewhere so his dogs can get in their practice. He has been wanting to do this with the boys for a long time, so this past week we finally made it happen.
The boys both took separate paths to A.J.'s parents' house across the golf course. Then after about an hour, G.L. and his two-hound crew came over and began the search. It took each of the two of them between 20 and 30 minutes to find each of my kiddos. Not too bad.
The dogs are a bit overwhelming for children who haven't been around dogs much. Both Alex and Ayson like dogs, but these are good-sized dogs that slobber a lot! :) The boys did great though and didn't seem to feel too uncomfortable.
Would we do it again? Probably not unless the boys were just dying to do it. But it was a cool and interesting learning experience to see how the dogs worked, and how on target they were. A fun afternoon!
